The Triumph of Christ: Declaring Victory Over the Powers of Darkness
8/7/25
The most profound victory in human history, celebrated in the heart of the Catholic faith, is Christ’s triumph over sin and the powers of darkness. This victory was accomplished on Calvary, where Jesus, the Son of God, willingly offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice for our redemption. As the Letter to the Hebrews proclaims: “14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.” (Hebrews 2:14-15).
Through His Passion, Death, and glorious Resurrection, Jesus Christ conquered the dominion of Satan and opened the way to eternal life for all who are united to Him in faith, especially through the sacraments. In Catholic teaching, this victory is not a distant event, but one made present to us in every Eucharist, where Christ’s sacrifice is re-presented and His power over evil is renewed in the Church.
Fear, in all its forms—be it of sickness, poverty, failure, or especially death—has been dispelled by the hope the Resurrection brings. Where once death held humanity captive, Christ, by rising from the dead, has transformed death into a passage to eternal life for those who abide in His grace. The Church proclaims this good news and invites all to receive the mercy of Christ through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, where the chains of sin are broken and the faithful are restored to life in God.
